Preventable Beach Towel

    If you’ve been reading this blog for a while or are a B.C. beach bum, you might be familiar with our summer drowning prevention campaign. This year, we’re tweaking what we usually do in order to get people thinking more about their attitudes when it comes to drowning. As in previous years, we’ll be leaving branded flip-flops and beach bags on beaches across B.C., but this time around, we have a new slogan emblazoned on the beach towels we leave behind as a reminder that some people might not be able to reclaim their beach goods if they don’t take precautions in and around the water.     Have you ever seen that TV program Canada’s Worst Driver? It’s one of many “worst” something or other reality shows were the audience can laugh at the follies of strangers and ultimately feel better about their own inabilities. Personally, I’ve never seen more than a few episodes and never in their entirely. To be honest, I don’t remember much from watching them other than the part where the terrible drivers have to navigate an obstacle course made of orange safety cones. And every time I’ve seen this scenario, the driver slams into, or drives over, most of these bright safety cones almost to a comedic effect. I say “almost” because if those cones were people, the results wouldn’t be so laughable.

    Construction Site

    Have you ever worked on a construction site? I have. There’s a lot going on when a home or building is being constructed. Cement gets poured, plumbing and electricity get installed, and framing gets put up by tradespeople above and below others on the construction site. Often, there is a number of independently working tradespeople, supervisors, engineers, and architects on site at the same time. Any time you have this concentration of people working in a potentially hazardous environment, the probability that someone will get injured increases. How hazardous is construction in BC?
