If you live in Vancouver, you’ve probably seen them… a swarm of cyclists and skateboarders that take over the downtown streets once a month for a slow parade through the downtown core. They’re making a point that cyclists are just as important as drivers and that we should pay attention to them.
Point taken.
But have you noticed that between one-third and one-half of the cyclists and boarders are not wearing proper protective headgear?
What up, Critical Mass? As advocates of cycling, shouldn’t you actively encourage participants to wear proper helmets. Not only is it the law, it’s common sense to properly protect yourself when riding a bike or a skateboard.
Whether you like what Critical Mass or not, they are effective at making a point by taking over the city streets with thousands of bikes every month. As a cyclist, I applaud them. As a driver, I hope I don’t run into them. But as a member of The Community, I would encourage them to increase the safety of the participants and raise awareness about proper bicycle safety by actively encouraging Critical Mass cyclists to don proper helmets. Critical Mass is very influential in the cycling community in Vancouver and it’s time for them to recognize this influence and use it for the improved safety of their members.
So what up, Critical Mass, you ready to step up and take on this critical challenge?
