    My friends M & T have a couple of fantastic little girls. They’re twins, but not the identical kind (I think they call that fraternal). M is a nurse, which means if one of the little tikes injures themselves, she’s on call. It also means she’s exposed to a whole gamut of nasty injuries. As M explained to me,

    “Being a neurological ward nurse, I see young kids come in all the time with head injuries.”

     Backpacks

    I was transported back in time this week. It’s back to school for thousands of kids in Vancouver, and the squeals of excitement and smell of grass on the school field of Jules Quesnel Elementary School reminded me of the anticipation and anxiety I felt when I was in their shoes 100 years ago. As I attempted to snap some pics of the ebullient youth as they crossed the street, I recalled the tragic traffic fatality of a young girl in downtown Vancouver two weeks ago.

    On hot days of the year, like we’ve had recently in Vancouver, many of us pine for a backyard pool to cool off in. But it’s important to remember, for those that have a pool, that they’re a huge responsibilty and it only takes a moment for things to get very dangerous, very quick.

    Urgent Alert: Preventing Home Pool Drownings
    MONTREAL, Aug. 10 /CNW Telbec/

    Regardless of age or skill level no one is drown-proof. The Montreal Children’s Hospital Trauma Centre of the MUHC warns parents about the dangers of young children drowning in above-ground or in-ground backyard swimming pools. This warning is prompted by the second case in the past week of a child who was hospitalized at the Trauma Centre following a near-drowning event. The toddler was hospitalized last week and was cared for by MCH Trauma specialists. She has since recovered well and has been discharged home. Earlier in the same week another toddler was not as fortunate and succumbed to his injuries after drowning in an above ground pool.
