    Global TV talks about The Community and focuses on the story of a skateboarder who crashed a few years ago while not wearing a helmet. Touching stuff, well worth watching.

    Long weekends are often a time of increased injuries in British Columbia, and sadly, this Canada Day weekend was no exception.

    It’s early on Monday morning and we’ve already heard about three people that died of injuries over the weekend, from drowning, skateboarding and a pedestrian being hit by a motorcycle. All three incidents are examples of preventable injuries that The Community is raising awareness about.

    Teen believed to have drowned in Harrison Lake

    AGASSIZ — A 19-year-old man is thought to have drowned while swimming in Harrison Lake.

    The man was with his friend Sunday afternoon when the friend turned around and noticed his companion was missing.

    Kelowna skateboarder dies “skitching”

    A 21-year-old Kelowna man is dead after being run over by friend’s car in a skateboard stunt gone terribly wrong.

    The incident took place the evening of July 2. The man was hanging onto the passenger door of a vehicle driven by his friend — a practice known as skitching — when he fell from his board.

    Man hit, killed by bike

    A man stepped off the curb into a crosswalk and was hit and killed by a motorcycle in Kamloops late Sunday night . The motorcycle driver was treated in hospital for his injuries and released.

    We would have liked to see the skateboarder in the main image for skateboarding week be wearing a helmet, however. Like the press release says, skateboarding has come a long way in Vancouver, now let’s all join together to make wearing a helmet a regular part of riding your board.
