    Laws prohibiting people from doing things society deems harmful are all well and good, but if people don’t believe and comply with them, they’re useless. Case in point: Maria Shriver getting caught talking on her cell phone while driving. In California, you’re required to use a hands-free device if you want to talk on a cell phone when behind the wheel.

    As much as I hate to admit it, the nice Vancouver weather is over. It’s around this time of year when work seems to be more intense, the daylight hours fewer, and the reasons to stay inside and imbibe my favorite beer, wine, and spirits are plentiful. Who doesn’t enjoy a glass of red after work, an après ski hot toddy, or a beer in the shower? Well, maybe not everyone can relate to the shower, but don’t knock it ‘til you try it (but for safety sake, please make sure it’s only one).

     Backpacks

    I was transported back in time this week. It’s back to school for thousands of kids in Vancouver, and the squeals of excitement and smell of grass on the school field of Jules Quesnel Elementary School reminded me of the anticipation and anxiety I felt when I was in their shoes 100 years ago. As I attempted to snap some pics of the ebullient youth as they crossed the street, I recalled the tragic traffic fatality of a young girl in downtown Vancouver two weeks ago.
