The Abbotsford News reported earlier this week that accidental injury remains the number one killer of kids aged 1 to 14. The term ‘accident’ is thrown around quite a bit. Is it really an ‘accident’ when you don’t take the proper precautions, or is it a preventable injury that you’ll regret for the rest of your life?!

    Putting your child into a booster seat will help protect their neck, spine and internal organs in case of a crash but too many kids are not restrained at all or put in a booster seat that’s the wrong size for their height and weight.

    You’re a busy person and texting is a great way to stay in touch with friends while on the go. I get it.

    When mobile phones first became popular in the 90s the big problem was talking while driving (without your hands-free, that is) and through awareness and the advent of technology, that problem has been greatly reduced. But now there’s an even bigger issue at hand, texting while driving, because not only are you distracted while weaving in and out of traffic, now you’re looking down at your phone and typing at the same time.

    While that’s usually a good thing, it can also lead to dangerous situations when left unattended in the home. Mike Tyson’s 4- year old daughter recently died after being strangled by the power chords of a treadmill while left unattended at her home.

    Safe Kids USA cautions parents to look at all possible things their children can get into and take preventative measures, such as ensuring windows are secured and out of reach, flat screen TVs are mounted on the wall or far enough back so they can’t be toppled and all window cords and power cords are safely stowed away and out of a child’s reach.
