A sad twist on the lifejacket message we’ve been talking about all summer long, a man in Kamloops jumped off a speeding boat and the impact led to his probable drowning. It’s unfortunate that we still don’t treat the water as the dangerous environment it is. We think that because we can speed along the top in relative safety there’s no need to strap on a life jacket. 

    Wrong.

    The important message here is to always wear a life jacket when boating, whether taking a speedboat at top speed or cruising on the yacht.

    In the last week, there have been several instances of people being killed or seriously injured in motor vehicle collisions because they were not wearing their seatbelts.

     This has been a law for many years (about 30). Shouldn’t this be common practice? Why are people being so stupid? A seatbelt is a quick and easy way to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.

    The recent tragic incident of the 2 year old in her stroller who was killed by a truck while her mother crossed the street on Expo Blvd. in Gastown has raised public awareness about pedestrian safety. Many letters to the Editor and opinion pieces were published.

    This is a heart-wrenching incident, yet there are many others that regularly occur on our streets.

    Each week, one pedestrian dies and 12 pedestrians are hospitalized! This means that one to two pedestrians are injured seriously enough to require hospitalization EACH DAY in BC. These deaths and injuries don’t need to happen, they are preventable!

    With the start of the school year just around the corner, we know there will be a huge increase in traffic and pedestrians on the roads. How can we be safe?

    Let’s recognize our responsibility and look out for each other, as pedestrians, as drivers and as cyclists. Enjoy your session back in school and be safe.
