    The world of skateboarding is competitive with a raw and edgy attitude that demands bigger and better tricks and jumps.

    With the rise in popularity of the sport comes an increase in the number of serious injuries. Like other popular wheeled recreational sports – such as roller-blading – skateboarding has its risks. But we can minimize many of those risks just by wearing the right protective gear.

    One fall – that’s all it takes to suffer a serious injury. Head and neck injuries are the most dangerous, and can lead to severe head trauma or even death. Head-related injuries account for 15 per cent of all injuries in British Columbia.

    Jessica Des Mazes has gone on to live a full life after she was left disabled=

    The truck flipped over twice and the next thing Jessica Des Mazes can remember is lying on her back, staring up at the sky, with an incredible pain shooting up her spine

    and no feeling in either of her legs.

    “I thought I had landed on an axe,” she recalls. “There was an explosion of pain.”
    It was Aug. 6, 2004, just before her 21st birthday, and the Kamloops native was thousands of miles from home on a dirt road in the Northwest Territories, where she had gone to work as a forest firefighter for the summer.
