BC is about to take the lead in ensuring the safety of its citizens yet again. Our Lt-Gov Steven Point emphasized that we will soon be seeing new legislation that deals with the use cell phones while driving, a hot button issue in North America as we’re seeing a sharp increase in injuries due to texting and talking while on the roads.

"Government will introduce legislation to restrict cell phone use while driving a vehicle to create a safer driving and pedestrian environment for all."

What form will the legislation take, we don’t know yet. There’s also the question of enforcement, but thankfully that’s something we’ll leave up to the professionals. As we start winding down the first summer of The Community in BC, we see this as a big step forward towards further ensuring the safety of British Columbians on the roads. While some of you may not like the government’s involvement in whether or not you can use your phone while driving, remember that it was only a few decades ago that seat belt use wasn’t mandatory and since that changed, we’ve seen dramatic reductions in fatalities and injuries.

What do you think about this pending legislation and what form do you think it should take?

You have probably read the many headlines and the radio clips concerning a ban on cell phone use while driving. We want to hear your opinion on this!

Yesterday, the BC Government stated: "Government will introduce legislation to restrict cell phone use while driving a vehicle to create a safer driving and pedestrian environment for all."

A recent survey by Ipsos Reid found that there is definite public support. 76% were in favour of a complete ban on cell phone use by drivers and 92% saw this as a serious road safety issue!

Research suggests that there is no difference in driver distraction between hand-held and hands-free phone use. Drivers are four times more likely to have a collision when using phones, regardless of the mode of operation. For more research information click here.

What’s your attitude about this issue? Will we see a change in behaviour if this is implemented? Will we see a decrease in the number of motor vehicle collisions or distracted driving?

It’s so sad when you hear a story like the one about the 12 year old boy in Parksville who was hit by a car while riding his bike, but unfortunately it happens all the time. We have to remember that we’re the ones driving a big tank down the road and if we hit someone on a bike, there will be serious damage caused. So let’s all keep an eye out for each other’s safety when hitting the streets and give cyclists a wide berth.

    Stay safe out there!
